Partly joking, that’s what someone said to me when I introduced myself. As an IT Consultant and Project Manager with 25 years experience, it was a new one for me! 🙂
When we’re asked “So What Do You Do?”, we have 3 options:
1) A robotic role title e.g. “I’m Senior Director, Customer Service”.
2) A 10-minute ramble.
3) A succinct elevator pitch.
Option #3 is best. A short, interesting statement that entices them to learn more, delivered in the short time of an elevator ride.
Take note! Your elevator pitch changes depending on who’s asking.
Talking to a fellow IT Project Manager, I’ll say “I help IT Project Managers get the recognition they deserve”.
Talking to an IT Director, I’ll be more specific e.g. “I’m just wrapping up a major ERP migration to Azure Cloud”.
I don’t mention IT to someone who doesn’t work in corporate or IT. E.g. “I help companies automate their financial reporting”.
Once I get the conversation going, then I’ll share more details about technology, AI and optimization.
Tomorrow I’ll share a framework I use for creating your elevator pitch.
How do you introduce yourself?
