So What Do You Do?

When you work in Technology and IT, introducing yourself to other people is always interesting 😀.

I’ve worked on this for years and what most people don’t realize is that it depends on who you’re talking to.

Think about it from their perspective. What’s In It For Me? What could they get out of your introduction? How could you help them?

From year’s of research and practice, here’s what I’ve learned.
How to create your own introduction by answer these simple questions:

What do you do?

What’s different about your approach?

What problems do you solve and for who?

What would other people want to know about you?

Then combine your answers and craft them down into a succinct statement using this structure:

I (action verb) + (target audience) + (what) so they can (benefit 1, benefit 2, and benefit 3).

For example:

“I help IT Project Managers streamline their project delivery so they can boost their careers and get the recognition they deserve.”

Or

“I help Finance leader how to automate reporting so they can streamline business processes and reduce costs by 47%.”

Practice your elevator pitch and say it loud.
Record yourself and listen back so you know what they would hear.
