5 Ways to Get Your IT Project Back On Track 🚂

I’ve been there. In the thick of IT Project Delivery. Things are not going to plan. Key people are not available. Not enough time in the day and deadlines are looming.

It’s tough. 🥊 But there is a way out.

When I’m stuck and overwhelmed, here’s what I do:

1) Goals. What’s needed now, next month and in 6 months? Reset and focus on the immediate goals that directly contribute to the overall project goals.

2) How things get done. Is your status reporting slowing you down? Are decisions taking too long? Too many meetings? Take a hard look at your week and shorten meetings, streamline process, delegate where you can.

3) Right people. Project roles change over time. People change too. Review who’s doing what and are they right for the job. Ask them where they want to be. Reorganize your team for delivery.

4) Restart. Sometimes the best way to get back on track is to restart the project. Pause the work, reset the plan and set-up a restart meeting with everyone. Be open and honest with your team and get them excited about starting fresh.

5) Traction. Show progress. Often! Share results with your stakeholders, team, sponsors. Don’t assume everyone knows. Repeat messages. Have a communication plan and follow it.
